My young adult novel Flying High was written in 2003. It is historical fiction, entertaining and written with an intention to bring young readers the events of the Second World War on the Canadian prairies.
After the bad years of the Great Depression, fourteen-year-old Paul wants to follow his older brother, Riley who has joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Paul and his best friend Robert are reminded every day that there is a great struggle being fought as training aircraft fly over Paul’s family farm from a Air Training School nearby. They find out that they can make a contribution to the national effort and play a critical role as they earn their way onto one of those bright yellow training airplanes. They find themselves flying high above the world they know so well.
